Gies College of Business, October 5, 2017

It is with a heavy heart that I write to share the sad news Professor Huseyin Leblebici passed away today.

Huseyin served with great distinction on our faculty for thirty-eight years, after earning both his MBA and his PhD from Illinois. He was one of our most highly regarded scholars, most effective teachers, and most dedicated servants. Huseyin served as Head of the Department of Business Administration for ten years. He was the Director of the Office of Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship from 1997-2003. He has continued to mentor students and take leadership roles in the field, including starting a journal, up to the present.

We will all remember Huseyin’s kindness, dedication to the College of Business, and devotion to his students and Illinois family.

Jeffrey R. Brown
Josef and Margot Lakonishok Professor of Business and Dean
College of Business
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Alex Siyeon Kim: Rest In Peace Professor. I remember your kindness, passion for teaching and helping students to grow. Thank you for everything.

Lisa Bowden: I am deeply saddened to hear of of Prof. Leb's passing. He was a wonderful professor who inspired me to achieve my best in the EMBA program. Such a huge loss to our Illini community and even more so to his family. May he Rest In Peace.

Rui Cai: RIP he was a great professor. Very nice to his students.

Mohammad Anas Wahaj:
Sad news. Condolences. Great professor and great person. RIP

Maryann Carrero: Sad news to hear, he was a wonderful professor to have while I pursued my EMBA from the University.

Ashok K. Lalwani:
I’m very sorry to learn about Huseyin’s demise. He was an exceptional department head and a great mentor. Although I was just a PhD student at Illinois when he was department head, he was always available to talk with me about any matter, even though I was not from his sub-discipline (I was in marketing). May his soul rest in peace.

Laurel Newman: Huseyin was my dissertation chair. I owe a great deal to him and am deeply saddened to learn of his passing. He represented the best of the University of Illinois and was a mentor to many of us in the OB/OT PhD program.

Shiyu Yang:
Professor Huseyin Leblebici was always incredibly gracious and supportive to students. Memory about him will continue to be an inspiration to many of us.

Don Carter: This is such sad news. I really liked and enjoyed Professor Leblebici's EMBA course, although it took a while before we understood the difference between a business "strategy" and business "model." He did his best to explain it several times but man, was it confusing at the time! I had to actually call Professor Huseyin during our EMBA module 2 course with him because our team paper on British Petroleum was a train wreck (to put it mildly.) He was very gracious, understanding, offered up suggestions on how to get it on track, and really just wanted to make sure we were learning the information and concepts, as opposed to trying to turn in the perfect paper. I also appreciated the extra time he spent just offering his advice and counsel during the program. He was a very nice man, and seemed like a good decent person and cared about teaching. Rest in peace Professor and we know our friend, Professor Magelli is awaiting to greet you up in Heaven.

Stephen Bowden:
Just the sweetest man imaginable - always made time for you, always a smile, a laugh and something deeply insightful to make you think. Deepest condolences to the family he adored.

David M Brock:
The JPO family has suffered a significant loss with the passing of Founding Editor Huseyin Leblebici. Huseyin was a true scholar, intellectual, a natural mentor to so many of us, and a gentleman. His contribution to JPO’s founding and early success was fundamental.
Many of us were fortunate to spend time with Huseyin during the EGOS and PSF meetings this past July – although he mentioned some aches and pains, he seemed to be in good spirits and was his usual formidable self in contributing to these conferences that are so important to our field.
Our heartfelt sympathies are with Ruth, their daughters and families.

Moshe Farjoun:
"What a loss. Huseyin was a wonderful colleague and friend. He encouraged me to do my first historical research. I miss his companionship, meeting him frequently at Urbana-Champaign coffee shops, long talks about politics, design, Coase and so many other subjects. A rare combination of a true intellectual and a person keenly interested in other people. I will no longer get a hug from you at the AOM meeting - but at this sad moment I am sending a big hug to your dear family who you were so proud of."

John Mawdsley:
A warm hearted man and a fantastic scholar who influenced everyone from doctoral students to senior members of the field. One of my doctoral committee members. He will be a great loss to UIUC and academia.

Yasemin Kor:
We are all so shaken with his unexpected passing. He touched so many lives with his generosity and being an excellent host at Illinois. I learned how to do a research workshop from him during his Ph.D. course, which became the highlight of my doctoral seminar. It was all about sharing ideas and helping to improve the other person's work. Giving felt great. He also introduced me to professional service firms as a research setting and all the richness about the resources and relationships. Loved the contextual details of the research setting. Again, the connection happened. I guess what was magical about his was the connection and connecting. We are lucky to have known him.

Amit Jain: Professor Leblebici was the instructor for my first Ph.D. seminar and I still remember his valuable research advise from nine years ago (1. Write and 2. Submit). Later on, he agreed to be on my dissertation committee, providing valuable feedback on my research work, and even wrote me a letter of recommendation that helped me land my current job a few years ago. I am deeply saddened by the news and will miss him dearly. My condolences to his family and friends.

Anca Metiu:
Professor Leblebici embodied what is best in our profession: humanity and scholarship. He encouraged me to do a PhD, and bestowed kind and generous advice whenever we crossed paths. I miss already. My deepest condoleances to his family.

Martin James Kilduff:
I remember the many occasions I shared moments and laughs with Huseyin. He was so upbeat. A lovely gentleman, a true scholar, and a much-missed friend. He was always a delight to talk to at professional meetings such as the Academy. His smile and generous spirit will be remembered. I'm very saddened by his passing.

Seth Carnahan: Huseyin taught my first doctoral seminar. He left a lasting impression on me with his sweet personality and his intellectual sharpness. He exuded a goodness and warmth that are difficult to describe but unmistakable when you are in their presence. We will miss you, Huseyin, and we send our love to your family.

Teresa Nelson:
As a woman, feminist, mother and PhD student in strategy at the U of I in the '80s, I sure felt like a duck out of water in the cornfields. Huseyin was my constant - I'm sure I completed my degree due to him. Friend, teacher, committee member and later co-author - a role model of elegant, human warmth and charm. With love to Huseyin.

Jeffrey Pfeffer: I remember meeting Huseyin in the early 1970s.  He was always so polite, quiet, and charming. At Salancik's memorial service at Pittsburgh, I drove him to the airport in a rental car. We share stories. His talk at the service was moving. He began with the phrase, "Gerald Salancik was my professor," said in a tone of reverence. Although I was not much in touch with him in recent years, his kindness and warmth will be forever in my heart.

Kevin Rockmann: Always a smile, always a chuckle, taught us never and I mean NEVER to take ourselves and our work too seriously. A lesson we all need to be reminded of every now and then. Thanks Huseyin.

Andrew von Nordenflycht:
I'm very sorry to hear that has Huseyin left us. I always looked forward to seeing him at conferences for his personal warmth and charisma. I'm very thankful to him for co-founding JPO.

Rob Hinings:
I will miss Huseyin; a considerate and compassionate scholar and human being.

Tina Dacin:
I spoke with Huseyin at least once at every conference. He was a kind and gentle soul.

Rose Xiaowei Luo: I couldn’t hold my tears receiving this sad news. To me, I have lost a wonderful mentor and a dear friend. Huseyin is such an admirable man of integrity, wisdom, kindness, and generosity. He will always be a role model and inspiration to me. I remember he told me at my early stage of career after I had two kids in a row, “if you can spend two hours a day really concentrating on your research, you will make it.” What an encouragement his words were to me at that time! In those days I had to commute long hours to work in order to balance work and family situations, and I remember his understanding and warm smile, “I can see your dedication to your work…” He shared his child-raising advice with me as well, “when my daughter had a bad grade, I invited her to a fancy dinner – let’s celebrate as you do not have bad grades often!” I am still using this advice today so that my children will not focus on good grades but opportunities to learn.

I blame myself for not coming to see him in the past year. I saw him every AOM except for the last one which I missed. And now I will not be able to return his kindness…I am just heart-broken and cannot express my regret and sadness. I tell myself that the best way to remember him is to follow his example of helping others.

Debmalya Mukherjee: RIP. I attended his seminar at the University of Memphis and also had joined him for lunch. He came across as an extremely nice person. May he Rest In Peace.

Brianna Caza: I was lucky enough to take my first academic job under Huseyin's departmental leadership. Huseyin was an incredible scholar, a compassionate man, an amazing mentor, and a generous host. Huseyin's passing is a tremendous loss, and my thoughts are with his family during this time.

Nick Wang:
I was a doctoral student when Huseyin was the department chair. There are many great memories of him and with him – some in the department and others at holiday/end of semester parties when he invited doctoral students to his house. Those were times of laughter! When you had a problem and you went to him, he was not only always calm himself but he had this ability to make you feel calm and that everything would be okay…Huseyin, you are missed!

Namrata Malhotra:
I am deeply saddened by Huseyin's passing and in disbelief. All those intellectually stimulating conversations at different conferences (especially on professional services firm) over the years, his warmth and kindness I will always remember and cherish.

Hugh Gunz: I'm heartbroken at the news. Huseyin was that rare combination of fine scholar and warm, supportive and really nice person. Encountering him at a conference was always a high spot of the event. I shall miss him greatly.

Mike Zelin: One of the nicest, most genuine souls I ever met. Rest In Peace Prof Leb.

Fabio Fonti:
Huseyin was many things to me: professor, dissertation chair, mentor, and friend. More importantly, he was - no, he still is - the model I look up to when I think of an academic: humble, open, brilliant, and curious. But most of all kind, understanding, and funny. I have and will continue to use him as a model in my academic and personal life. He will be certainly missed and, also certainly, never forgotten.

Sharon Shavitt: Huseyin was a thoughtful and dedicated colleague, department head, and human being. I looked up to him and always appreciated his measured advice. Over the years, I learned so much from serving with him on departmental committees. His thinking was always guided by a focus on the good of the department in the long term, and he was unfailingly modest, unselfish, insightful, and kind. In many ways, the positive and collegial atmosphere in our department is a credit to his leadership. I still cannot believe he is gone. I already miss his warm smile in the hallways of Wohlers. May his memory be a blessing.

B Joseph White: Huseyin was an extraordinarily kind, caring and humble colleague - extraordinary in light of his achievements and contributions to the department, College, University and his field. He made the world better.

Rodney Lacey: Huseyn was the sort of person who would take the time to to talk with a first year graduate student the same way as with a senior colleague -- it was quite encouraging and really instructive all the same time. He was a scholarly gentleman and he will be missed.

Dale Fitzgibbons:
I was so lucky to have this wonderful man on my dissertation committee. His patience, intellectual insights, and good humor made that challenging process bearable. His efforts changed my life.

Maris Vargas: Professor Lieblebici is the reason I decided to join the MBA, his passion and perspective of business is what motivated me. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
